Note: I still dislike real bats, but these 3-D paper bats are alright by me.
As you might have noticed since Saturday, it is, in fact, the month of October. To state even more of the obvious, today is the third day of the month of October. Why do I bring these things up? Because that means there's only 28 days left until Halloween, so if you haven't yet gotten a start on your costume for this year, you've got roughly one lunar cycle to get cracking.
But there's no need to panic, Internets. That's precisely the reason why I'll taking this month to share useful costumery-type things you, so that you're not stuck in the checkout line of your local drugstore on October 30th with a battered knockoff Spongebob Squarepants mask. Because that's certainly not going to impress anybody, and we all know it.
So to start this month off properly, let's look at one of the quickest ways to turn any outfit into a costume: a pair of wings.
Of course, seeing as this is HH, that means straying a little bit from the beaten path, and that means we've got stuff like this pair of crocheted wings from NooMMooN. Because butterfly wings are played out, and we all know it.
If you're wanting to take the gothic route (or maybe just dress up as an albino bat,) there's always this felted bat-wing shawl from Crude Things.
Yes, I know this wing cape by celapiu isn't white, but I think it would make for an interesting take on that old standby costume: the angel. What about you?
Granted, this patchwork bird-wing cape pattern from Chicken Hill is meant for kids, but I think anybody with some skill with sewing would be able to tweak this towards being adult-sized. And if any of these highly skilled folks happen to know me, would you please make me one? That'd be awesome.
And just because I'm amazed I found it, here's a set of wings made from actual feathers from Wings and Things:
Now, before the PETA folks start getting mad, these feathers were apparently picked up after having been naturally molted, so no geese were harmed in the making of this pair of wings. So hooray for that.
And on that note, that's for today. See you Wednesday!
P.S. Today is also HH's second anniversary. That's two years' worth of hats and such, folks, and it most likely would not have happened if it weren't for all you readers/hat-lovers. So this is me, saying thank you to all of you. Thank you!
